DEEPX has brought a 25-TOPS neural processing unit (NPU — a chip dedicated to running AI models) to the Raspberry Pi 5, according to EE Times Asia. The move puts serious inference horsepower on a $100-class single-board computer.
The headline number is 25 TOPS. That's trillions of operations per second, the standard measure for AI accelerator throughput. For context, the Raspberry Pi 5's onboard Broadcom SoC has no dedicated NPU at all, so AI workloads today run on its CPU cores and arrive throttled.
What does this change for Raspberry Pi developers?
It removes the compute ceiling. A 25-TOPS add-on means vision models, detection networks and other inference tasks can run locally, on the board, without a cloud round-trip. That matters for the Pi's two biggest audiences:
- Hobbyists and educators, who gain a low-cost path into practical edge AI development.
- Industrial prototypers, who can validate camera-based inspection, monitoring and robotics workloads on hardware that costs less than a dinner for two before committing to production silicon.
DEEPX itself is no stranger to this segment. The Korean company builds standalone NPU silicon for edge devices and has positioned its chips around power-efficient inference — more operations per watt than general-purpose processors can manage.
The Raspberry Pi 5, released in late 2023, is the platform making this practical. Its PCI Express interface, a first for the Pi line, lets users attach accelerator cards and other expansion hardware directly. That bus is the doorway an external NPU walks through.
Why put an NPU on a $100 board?
Because the edge is where the volume is. Cameras, sensors and controllers in factories, retail and smart-home gear all need to interpret data on the spot. Sending everything to the cloud costs bandwidth, adds latency and creates a failure point when the network drops.
Local inference fixes that. And the developer economics are hard to argue with — a Pi 5 plus an NPU module still lands well below the cost of a dedicated AI edge box, which typically runs several hundred dollars.
The open questions
EE Times Asia's report names the chip and the platform. Details that will decide real adoption — pricing of the NPU module, supported software stack, model compatibility and availability dates — weren't in the announcement summary.
Those specifics matter. The Pi ecosystem has seen accelerator promises before, and software support has historically made or broken them. A 25-TOPS chip with a rough toolchain loses to a slower chip with a clean one.
For now, the signal is clear: DEEPX wants the Raspberry Pi 5 to be an edge AI development platform, not just a teaching tool. Developers watching this space should watch for module pricing and framework support next.
