Surafell Kebede, Meta's former manager of performance and capacity, has joined Anthropic's infrastructure supply chain team. The move adds a second Meta supply chain veteran to the AI firm's ranks. Kebede will work alongside Sham Parmar, another former Meta supply chain executive who made the same move earlier.
Anthropic is hiring for hardware logistics at a moment when it has committed roughly $517 billion in compute capacity leases over the past 11 months, as of September. That figure explains the recruitment. Capacity planning at this scale is a supply chain discipline, not a research one.
Who is Kebede and what did he do at Meta?
Kebede spent five and a half years at Meta. He managed performance and capacity there, and he also served as supply chain lead for large clusters under Meta's AGI effort. That role placed him inside the procurement machinery for some of the largest GPU deployments in the industry, which is precisely the experience Anthropic now needs.
His record extends beyond Meta. Kebede previously held supply chain roles at Apple and at the oil company Phillips 66. The span matters: hyperscale hardware logistics and energy-sector supply chains share a discipline in long-horizon contracting.
Anthropic has not disclosed Kebede's title, remit, or start date. The company also has not said how large the infrastructure supply chain team now is. Both omissions are standard for Anthropic, which rarely details internal organization.
What is Anthropic building around him?
The hiring signals an aggressive data center expansion:
- A pledge to invest $50 billion in US data centers with Fluidstack.
- A May deal with SpaceX (the Elon Musk-led firm) to rent 300MW of data center space at xAI data centers.
- Reportedly more than a dozen letters of intent with multiple US data center developers.
- A $11.6 billion deal with Akamai, $35 billion with Lambda, $45 billion with Nscale, and $19 billion with TeraWulf.
Each number is a commitment, not a delivered facility. Compute leases of this size typically carry multi-year build timelines, contingent financing, and delivery schedules that can slip. None of the counterparties has published capacity handover dates.
Does the hire change anything?
One manager does not move a $517 billion portfolio. But the pattern does: Kebede is the latest in a series of Meta staff joining Anthropic, and Parmar preceded him in the same function. Anthropic is building a supply chain organization staffed with people who have executed hyperscale cluster procurement before.
The bet is straightforward. Anthropic has signed the leases; now it must deliver the machines, power, and logistics behind them. Kebede managed exactly that problem at Meta for clusters tied to AGI training.
What remains unsaid is the constraint. Anthropic has not stated how much of the leased capacity is operational today versus contracted for future years. Until the company discloses delivery milestones, the $517 billion figure measures intent, not installed compute.
