Spec summary
- Iren plans a 900MW data center campus, Redbank, near Wagga Wagga, New South Wales.
- The project could attract more than AU$10 billion (US$7bn) in investment, with grid connection targeted from 2029.
- Redbank is not included in Iren's previously announced 5GW secured-power portfolio.
- Iren is also pursuing an 800MW campus in Bundey, South Australia, announced in June with grid connection expected around 2028.
- Iren operates around 23,000 GPUs with Microsoft as a major customer.

Iren has unveiled plans for a 900MW data center campus near Wagga Wagga, Australia, with more than AU$10 billion (US$7bn) in potential investment and a grid connection targeted for 2029.
The company announced the project, called Redbank, this week. It's in the early assessment phase. According to a dedicated project website, the site sits west of the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre on land that already hosts transmission infrastructure.
Wagga Wagga lies in the Riverina region of New South Wales, 455km southwest of Sydney and more than 230km west of Canberra.
Site renderings show at least four buildings of varying sizes plus an on-site substation.
What does the project include?
Iren will fund transmission costs itself and contract new renewable energy and storage to cover the campus's needs. The design calls for a closed-loop cooling system (a setup that recirculates coolant rather than drawing continuously on local water) to cut water use.
The company flagged one caveat for investors: Redbank is not part of its previously announced 5GW secured-power portfolio.
"Redbank has the potential to create local jobs and economic stimulus as well as community benefits for the Wagga Wagga area," Iren said in its announcement.
Who else is building in Wagga Wagga?
Iren isn't first to the city. Leading Edge DC, an Australian Edge data center firm, already operates a small facility there. CDC is also pursuing development in Wagga Wagga, with plans for a gigawatt-scale campus of its own.
Where does this fit in Iren's portfolio?
Founded in 2019, Iren runs crypto and AI sites across Canada and the US. Its fleet includes roughly 23,000 GPUs, with Microsoft as a major customer. Live and in-development sites span:
- Texas (Childress, Sweetwater)
- Oklahoma (Kiowa)
- British Columbia, Canada (Mackenzie, Prince George, Canal Flats)
The company recently acquired Spanish data center developer Nostrum, its entry into Europe.
Redbank adds to a second Australian play. In June, Iren announced an 800MW campus in Bundey, South Australia, with a grid connection expected around 2028.
What does this change for Iren?
It signals Australia has moved from speculation to pipeline. When Iren reported financial results earlier this year, CEO Roberts said the opportunity down under was "as significant as anywhere in our portfolio."
Redbank is the concrete follow-through. If both projects connect on schedule — Bundey around 2028, Redbank from 2029 — Iren would add 1.7GW of Australian capacity to a portfolio already spanning North America and Europe.
That's the plan. Grid connection timelines in Australia remain the variable to watch.
