A chemical group's technology arm has committed $3.3 billion (30,000 crore) to build a 500MW hyperscale data center in Maharashtra, India — despite having no documented experience developing data center facilities.

Trentar Private, the technology and infrastructure division of specialty chemicals maker Dorf Ketal Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Maharashtra this week. The proposed investment works out to roughly $6.6 million per megawatt, in line with typical hyperscale build costs in the region.

Under the MoU, the state government "will facilitate coordination on applicable permissions, registrations, approvals, clearances and incentives in accordance with prevailing policies and regulations." Trentar says the project has also received the state's letter of intent outlining applicable support and incentives.

Neither the site's precise location nor construction timelines have been disclosed.

What does the commitment actually cover?

For practitioners, the key detail is what an MoU is not: a construction contract. It's a facilitation agreement — Maharashtra pledges to smooth approvals and provide incentives, but the hard numbers on land, power procurement and delivery dates remain open. If you're a supplier, contractor or operator watching this pipeline, treat it as intent-stage until a location and grid connection surface.

Group founder and vice chairman Subodh Menon said his company would lean on modular construction to get the facility running quickly.

"Maharashtra has laid a strong foundation for India's digital economy, and we are proud to contribute to the State's next phase of growth," Menon said.

"For more than three decades, our group has delivered complex, mission-critical infrastructure through engineering excellence and operational discipline. We will bring that experience to a modular data center campus built for rapid deployment and scalable growth, with sustainability, advanced technology and cost efficiency at its core."

How credible is a chemicals firm as a data center developer?

Dorf Ketal, established in 1992, makes specialty chemicals for industrial applications. Its Trentar division invests across multiple technology areas but does not appear to have developed a data center before. That's not disqualifying — engineering-heavy industrials have transitioned into the sector before — but it shifts delivery risk onto partners and contractors.

The modular approach Menon references supports that read: prefabricated capacity blocks let newcomers scale in increments rather than betting the full 500MW on first-phase execution.

What are the sustainability targets?

Trentar has set a floor of 51 percent renewable energy for the facility. The company is also investigating recycled water use and efficient cooling systems. In a 500MW deployment, that renewable threshold alone would require contracted clean power in the gigawatt-class range — a procurement challenge as significant as the construction itself.

"The facility will contribute to a more secure, resilient and sovereign digital infrastructure for the country," the company said.

How crowded is the Maharashtra market?

Most of Maharashtra's existing data centers sit in Mumbai, home to one of India's largest data center clusters. Trentar's project joins a pipeline that already includes a $21 billion development from AirTrunk, which could eventually deliver 3GW — six times the capacity Trentar is proposing.

That puts the newcomer's 500MW in context: a meaningful addition, but roughly a sixth the scale of the state's largest announced build. For colocation buyers and hyperscale tenants, it signals Maharashtra's land-plus-power proposition keeps attracting capital from outside the traditional data center operator set.

The next milestones to watch: a named site, a grid and renewables procurement plan, and a general contractor. Until those land, the $3.3 billion figure stays a headline, not a build schedule.
